There were two major approaches in the field of physics, that is, theoretical physics and experimental physics. Theoretical physics has been expected to clarify the hidden principles in phenomena in nature, to solve basic equations, to make clear the mystery of phenomena in nature, and then to predict new phenomena in nature. But it is usually impossible to solve basic equations by papers and pencils.

In 1980s a new approach had emerged: i.e. computational physics. With the aid of computers, the basic equations describing the phenomena in nature could be solved numerically, then experimental data is compared with computed results, and even new phenomena could be predicted prior to the experimental evidences. To make this computational approach effective, we need to develop new mathematical methodologies, innovate efficient algorithms for computations, and of course examine validity of computed results on the basis of basic principles in physics and intuitive insights.

Our group aims at clarifying underlying physics and chemistry in various phenomena in materials using theoretical and computational approaches. Prediction of new phenomena and design of novel structures that may be useful for engineering applications are also our targets. It is certainly exciting to clarify mystery in nature and discover novel phenomena using computational approaches based on first principles of quantum theory. Let us launch a new journey in research with full of adventure and knowledge!
